There are many fantastic rides to be had straight from your door. The N125 is an easy road to cycle, it has large hard shoulders ideal for keeping you away from any traffic, but it is a little boring, so venture off it to discover lovely quiet roads.
Turn left from the Villa and follow the road with a fantastic sweeping descent to Boca do Rio, then take the short but steep (18%) climb towards Salema. Reward yourself with a coffee in Salema then either come back the same way or take the road out of Salema onto the N125 following this east until you reach the Burgau turn and home. Approx 15miles round trip. |

Then follow the road thru Bensafrim towards Aljezur. Take the left at Espinhaco de Cao (wind turbines in front of you) towards Monte Ruivo, Cairo, Carrapateira, Vila do Bispo Salema- Boca do Rio- Burgau. Approx 45 miles round trip |

Take this road west all the way to Sagres & Cape St Vincent (next stop America!) try to pick a not too windy day, although some breeze behind you on the way home (which it almost always will be) is fantastic. Along this road explore the many roads that go off to some amazing bays i.e Castelejo, Cordama they both have good cafes where you can sit in the sun and watch the ocean and the intrepid surfers. The garage downstairs is your bike store. To wash down your bike use the hose provided, and do it outside the up and over garage door as there is a gulley for the run off.

The Lagos Road Bike Club meet every Saturday and Sunday at 9.00am at the San Sebastio square (where all the banks are) in Lagos.There are regularly 20+ out on a Sunday. They also meet in lesser numbers on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9.30am at the Stadium near the Municipal Swimming Centre which is opposite Macdonalds. Miguel at the Navagador restaurant on top of the hill in Burgau is a member and very helpful, he has excellent English.
There is a good bike shop in Lagos called Xtreme Bikes, they are just outside the town walls at the top of the town. Paulo the owner has impeccable English and can always help with repairs etc.
Every February (usually the 3rd week) the Algarve hosts The Volta ao Algarve, this is one of the first pro tour stage races of the season and attracts many of the top riders (Alberto Contador has won it the past 2 years). This is a fantastic week to kick off your training, whilst taking in the racing. Starts and finishes are very relaxed, you can get right up close to the stars, their bikes and team buses etc. Temperatures are typically late teens early twenties.................yes you will get brown legs!
